Alex Murphy

Managing Director at UTS:INSEARCH

Alex has 20 years’ experience with UTS:INSEARCH. He joined INSEARCH Language Centre in 1992, teaching Indonesian language and coordinating teaching and curriculum development in Asian and European Languages. In 2000, Alex was appointed Head of Marketing and took on the role of Managing Director in September 2007. Alex’s background is in Linguistics and Indonesian and Malayan Studies, having undertaken research at the University of Sydney, before living and working in Jakarta from 1986 to 1989. A member of the St James Ethics Centre since 1997, Alex has also been undertaking leadership development and group relations programs with the Australian Institute of Socio-Analysis and Tavistock Institute (UK) over the past fifteen years

Alexander Rusli

President Director & Chief Executive Officer at Indosat Ooredo

Alexander Rusli was appointed as President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo in November 2012 after serving as an Independent Commissioner since January 2010. Mr. Rusli completed all his formal tertiary education in Curtin University, Western Australia; where he holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Information Systems. Prior his role in Indosat Ooredoo, Mr. Rusli was a Managing Director in Northstar Pacific, a private equity fund which focuses on Indonesian and Southeast Asian opportunities. Mr. Rusli had served the Government of Indonesia for nine years. In his first six years in government, he was an Expert Advisor to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, where he was involved in the formulation of policy and regulation in the Telecommunication, Media and Postal industries. In his last three years in government services, he was an Expert Staff to the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, overseeing approximately 140 state-owned enterprises with more than 500 subsidiaries.

Andre Siregar

Consul at Indonesian Consulate, Darwin

Andre Omer Siregar is the Indonesian Consul in Darwin. From 2011 to 2014, he was the interpreter for former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Prior to this, he held a number of policy and interpreting roles in Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Head of International Financial Institutions and in Timor Leste, the United Nations, and the United States. He studied at Victoria University in Wellington, and holds a Masters of Diplomacy and Trade from Monash University in Melbourne.

David Gaveau

Coordinator of the Landscapes Laboratory at CIFOR

Dr. David Gaveau is a Landscape Ecologist, and currently the coordinator of the Landscapes Laboratory at the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) in Bogor, Indonesia. He specializes in the use of remote sensing to study the impacts of humans on Earth’s land surface. He examines the effects of land use and land cover change in tropical Asia and Central Africa on atmospheric carbon emissions, air quality degradation, rainfall, biodiversity and viruses outbreaks, as well as the impacts of conservation strategies and agricultural development policies on tropical forests. His particular focus is on long-term mapping of tropical deforestation, forest degradation and regeneration. He has extensive knowledge of the environmental policies and practices of several Southeast Asian countries. He has a mix of field experience, research networks and collaborative partnerships with local, regional and international non-governmental organizations in Southeast Asia, the US and Europe.

Dr Dewi Fortuna Anwar

Deputy for Government Policy Support, Office of the Vice President

Dewi Fortuna Anwar straddles the world of academia, political activism and government. She has written widely on Indonesia’s foreign policy, Indonesia’s democratization as well as on ASEAN and regional political and security issues. She is a Research Professor at P2P-LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Sciences) and was the Deputy Chairman for Social Sciences and Humanities-LIPI from 2001 to 2010. She was appointed as Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs in October 2010 and since May 2015 as Deputy for Government Policy Support of the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia. Dewi is also the Chairman of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, The Habibie Center, a private think-tank based in Jakarta. Dewi was Assistant Minister/State Secretary for Foreign Affairs in1998-99. Dewi was a Visiting Fellow at CSEAS, Kyoto University in early 2010 and a Visiting Professor at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University in 2007.

Dewi sits and has sat in a number of national and international advisory boards. She is currently a member of the Governing Board of SIPRI and a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) of the Bali Democracy Forum. She served as a member of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission (WMDC) in 2004-2008, and a member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters in 2008-2012. Dewi was an APSA Congressional Fellow at the U.S. Congress in 1990-1991. She obtained her Phd from Monash University, Melbourne in 1990, while her M.A. and B.A. (Hons) were from SOAS, University of London in 1982 and 1981 respectively.

Dewi Bramono

Deputy Director of Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement of APP Indonesia.

Ms. Bramono is responsible to drive and monitor the implementation of standards and global best practices that improve the sustainability of APP’s operations in Indonesia. She is a key contributor to the development of policies, guidelines and systems required to help the organization in achieving its sustainability goals throughout APP’s and its suppliers’ operations.

She also manages the implementation of APP’s Forest Conservation Policy, launched in 2013, which includes commitments to zero deforestation and implementation of best management practices in peatland for carbon emission reduction across its pulpwood supply chain’s operations in Indonesia.

Ms. Bramono has BSc and MSc in engineering from Tufts University, USA, and an MBA degree from INSEAD, France & Singapore.

Elena Williams

Resident Director at ACICIS

Currently serving as the Resident Director for The Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies (ACICIS), Elena Williams has lived and worked in Indonesia for the past decade working in gender, development and education. After gaining her Masters of Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development (Gender Studies) from The Australian National University in 2012, Elena worked with UN Women’s Jakarta office in Monitoring & Evaluation before taking up the role of Resident Director with ACICIS. Fluent in Indonesian, Ms Williams also volunteers as an ‘Asian Literary Ambassador’ with the Asia Education Foundation, and was a previous participant in the Australia Youth Exchange Program (2007 -2008) and CAUSINDY delegate in Jakarta 2014.

Erik Meijer

President Director of Telkomtelstra, Indonesia Managing Director at Telstra

Erik is currently the President Director of Telkomtelstra, a joint venture between Australian telcom Telstra and local Indonesian telco PT Telkom. He is also the Indonesia Managing Director for Telstra.

Throughout his 25+ year career, Erik has worked in all aspects of the TMT (Telecoms, Media & Technology) space, as well as at an airline. He has held positions with KPN Royal Dutch Telecom, Bakrie Telecom, VIVA and Garuda. During this time he was a member of the Investment Board of Venture Capital companies Nusantara Ventures and Nusantara Incubation. Besides his formal job, Erik is also an Honorary Advisor to the Indonesian Minister of Tourism.

Erik was a Founding Board Member of the Indonesian Advertisers Association (APPINA – Asosiasi Perusahaan Pengiklan Indonesia) as well as an Honorary Advisory Board Member of the Harvard Review Indonesia Intellectual Business Community, and continues to be active as a Mentor of Indonesian start-up companies through the Founders’ Institute, Indonesian Angel Investor Club Angel-eQ, and other initiatives. He is a regular guest lecturer at universities and speaker at seminars and conferences.

He is a Dutch national, currently residing in Indonesia for the past 23 years.

Erik will be a special guest speaker at CAUSINDY’s pre-depature event in Jakarta, where he will discuss “What Australia and Indonesia can do to collaborate more in the digital economy”.

Faye Alund

President of Coworking Indonesia & Co-founder of Kumpul Coworking Space

Faye is the President of Coworking Indonesia, a national association for coworking spaces, movers and enthusiasts covering more than 10 cities and to date around 40 spaces in Indonesia. Coworking Indonesia has a vision to push forward the coworking movement for economic development in Indonesia. Faye is also a Co-Founder of Kumpul Coworking space, which is the first coworking space in Bali that hosts strong number of local communities and Indonesian members. Since graduated from University of Atmajaya with the degree in Psychology and Master in Peace and Conflict Studies, Politics and Social Science from University of Sydney, Faye has spent 12 years working in post-conflict and development sector across Asia, Africa and Middle East. With Kumpul and Coworking Indonesia, she aims to encourage the growth of local entrepreneurs and active citizenship, and to promote the skill-sharing and collaborative environment.

Greg Fealy

Associate Professor, Australian National University

Greg Fealy is Associate Professor of Indonesian Politics and head of the Department of Political and Social Change in the College of Asia and the Pacific at ANU, Canberra. He specialises in Islamic politics, radicalism and Australian-Indonesian relations. He has written extensively on Islamic issues including Itjihad Politik NU, Joining the Caravan: The Middle East, Islamism and Indonesia and Zealous Democrats: Islamism and Democracy in Egypt, Turkey and Indonesia.

He is the co-editor of Expressing Islam: Islamic Life and Politics in Indonesia and Voices of Islam in Southeast Asia. He was visiting Professor in Southeast Asian politics at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University in 2003 and prior to joining ANU, was an Indonesia analyst at the Australian Government’s Office of National Assessments. He has also been a consultant on political and religious projects for AusAID, DFAT, USAID, BP and The Asia Foundation.

Helen Brown

Journalist, Speaker, Moderator, ABC

A multi-media journalist with 20 years experience working in Australia and Asia. This includes four years on-the-ground as a correspondent in Indonesia, reporting on a pivotal democratic nation and the South East Asia region. Coverage includes 2014 Indonesian Presidential election, Bali 9 executions, trade disputes and numerous international/regional security and business summits.

Co-founded a discussion group in Jakarta between Indonesian and foreign/expat journalists to foster understanding of how issues are reported between countries, and provide professional support to each other.

A recent board member of the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club, including a year as secretary. An accomplished public speaker and moderator, particularly on providing insight on Asia.

Now working as a senior journalist in the ABC’s Melbourne newsroom, taking a particular interest in trade with Asia, food and agribusiness. Other recent assignments include covering the Royal Commission on Trade Unions Governance..

Past roles have included flagship programmes such as Lateline, The World and 7PM News, and as a national radio finance, and rural affairs reporter.

Jamie Camidge

Head of Muru-D Singapore

Jamie is Head of muru-D Singapore, Telstra’s startup accelerator for the ASEAN region. He is an experienced strategist within the telecoms, media and technology sector, with strong transaction experience. Jamie has held a number of executive roles at Telstra since 2008, including General Manager, Corporate Strategy and Director of Strategy for Telstra Media Group (FOXTEL, Sensis and Digital Media). His roles at Telstra saw him advising the Telstra CEO and Board multiple market entry / exit strategies including the $2.5Bn acquisition AUSTAR COMMUNICATIONS and Telstra’s recent partial divestment of Sensis. Prior to joining Telstra, Jamie worked as a management consultant, serving clients including ANZ Bank, BNP Paribas, Downer EDI, General Motors Holden, and Telecom New Zealand. He is also co-founder of Pisces Group, which provides electronic loan application processing, mortgage data solutions, and broker business software.

Justin Fox

Partner at Corrs Chambers Westgarth

Justin is a Partner at Corrs Chambers Westgarth. He is the Chair of Corrs’ South East Asia practice, and has over 20 years’ experience advising on cross border investment between Australia and in Indonesia. Justin lived and worked in Jakarta with local firm Hanafiah, Ponggawa and Partners in the late 1990s. He speaks fluent Indonesian and regularly represents Australia on international trade delegations. Justin has expertise in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions to a diverse range of industries, including food and beverage, media and telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, construction, property development and hospitality. He has been voted as one of Australia’s leading mergers and acquisitions lawyers in each year from 2010 – 2016.

Dr Justin Lee

Deputy Head of Mission to Indonesia

Dr Lee was previously Australia’s Ambassador for Climate Change (2012-2014), High Commissioner to Bangladesh (2009-2012) and also served overseas as Counsellor and Head of the Political Section in Jakarta (2005-2008) and as Third and later Second Secretary at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby (1999-2001). He joined DFAT in 1995. Dr Justin Lee holds a BA (Jur.) (Hons), a PhD in Development Geography from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Diploma in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University.

Lydia Santoso

Lawyer and Public Notary

Lydia Santoso specialises the area of Indonesian-Australian law. Lydia is an Australian qualified lawyer and Public Notary, having obtained an Arts/Law degrees from the University of New South Wales. Lydia speaks fluent Indonesian and English and has worked in law firms both in Sydney and Jakarta. Lydia has acted for the Consulate General of Indonesia in Sydney, and for many Indonesian business owners located in the greater Sydney area, Indonesian property developers, Australian businesses with interests in Indonesia and many Indonesians living in Australia.

Being half Indonesian and half Australian, Lydia understands the Indonesian culture and provides valuable assistance to Indonesians who do not understand the Australian legal system fully or who do not speak the English language. Lydia also represents Australians who are unfamiliar with the Indonesian culture, language and the Indonesian Legal System. Lydia currently holds appointments as Advisory Board Member of the Australia Indonesia Institute 2015-2018, Special Advisor to the National Board of the Australia Indonesia Business Council, Member of the NSW Government Multicultural Business Advisory Panel and Vice President Australia Indonesia Association.

Marlowe Bandem

Micro-banking, education, radio, digital-arts lover & eco-defender urban dweller in Bali

Marlowe is a DJ, fixed-gear cyclist, creator of multi- media events, manager of two micro-financing banks, and vice chairman of the Widya Dharma Shanti Foundation that oversees STIKOM Bali, the largest ICT (information and communication technology) college in Bali. His latest collaborative initiatives include The Bali 1928 Project, a repatriation project of where Balinese recordings and films of the 1920s were repatriated from several countries; and Bali Record Store Day (April 2016) and SPRITES ART LAB: AGNI in Desa Lawak Badung (June 2016). Marlowe has contributed to many arts events in Bali, including Jean-Michel Basquiat Exhibition at Darga Gallery (2005), Bali Biennale: Space & Scape (2005), reclaiming public spaces via Ebullience Art Event (2009), and SPRITES Art and Creative Biennale (2013, 2015).

Mathew Benjamin

Mathew is co-founder of AsiaRecon – a community platform that was set up to help foster, develop, and build Australia’s engagement across the technology, innovation and entrepreneurial sector within Asia by promoting the transfer of people, ideas and capital.

Mathew also currently works with Stone & Chalk, a fintech hub based in Sydney, Australia. As Head of their Asia Program Mathew is responsible for formulating the group’s strategy and developing strategic partnerships across the region.

Before this, Mathew worked in real estate funds management industry for five years, working across areas of research, portfolio management, and strategy.

Mathew graduated with a B.Commerce (Property Economics) from the University of Western Sydney in 2011. He will soon hold a Masters of International Business & Law from the University of Sydney and has also undertaken coursework at East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai, and was awarded the Taiwan Ministry of Education MTC Scholarship to undertake Chinese studies at the National Taiwan National University, Taipei.

Okky Madasari

Author

Okky Madasari is an Indonesian author. She won an Indonesian major literary prize, the Khatulistiwa Literary Award, in 2012 for her third novel,Maryam. At the age of 28, she is the youngest ever to win this prestigious award. Her novels were shortlisted three years in a row by the same award’s judges. Beside writing fictions, she is also active in promoting literary awareness among young people in Indonesia and the region. She is the co-founder of the ASEAN Literary Festival. Okky graduated from Gadjah Mada University’s International Relations Department in 2005 with bachelor’s degree in Political Science. In 2012, she took sociology for her master’s degree from the University of Indonesia, and graduated in July 2014 with a thesis on Genealogy of Indonesian Novels: Capitalism, Islam and Critical Literature.

Paul is a Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow at Monash University and the inaugural Director of the Australia-Indonesia Centre based at Monash’s Caulfield campus. He has a passion for leadership, soft diplomacy, innovation, cross-cultural dialogue and, of course, for the Australia- Indonesia relationship. Paul joined Monash University in 2012 after a high-profile career in the media. From 2008 to 2012, he was Editor-in-Chief of The Age, one of Australia’s most influential and respected publications.

Prodita Sabarini is the Jakarta editor for The Conversation. Before joining The Conversation, Prodita worked for 7 years as a reporter for the Jakarta-based English daily The Jakarta Post. In 2013-2014, she was the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for International Studies.

I Wayan Juniarta

Writer and Journalist

I Wayan Juniarta is a full-time Balinese journalist. He is the manager of the Indonesian writers program for the Ubud Writers’ and Readers’ Festival (UWRF) and is the head of The Jakarta Post editorial team in Bali. He has two decades of journalistic experience and presents a Balinese perspective that is cosmopolitan and critical. His work for the UWRF makes him an important conduit for international audiences to encounter Indonesian literature. He finds solace in crafting essays following his tragically failed attempt in writing poetry. His first and probably last book, Bungklang-Bungkling, records the hilarity and ludicrousness of Balinese men.

Yansen Kamto

Yansen Kamto is a big fan of technology that solves problems. His company, KIBAR, not only focuses on incubating and accelerating Indonesian youths to build meaningful startups but also on building ecosystems by collaborating with policy makers, universities, communities, and tech companies. With KIBAR, Yansen initiated the 1,000 startups movement, in partnership with Ministry of Communication & Information Technology, Republic of Indonesia. His heart always goes to meaningful initiatives aiming to lay solid foundation for sustainable tech ecosystem construction in Indonesia.

Yuli Ismartono

Publisher, Tempo English

Yuli Ismartono, a publisher of Tempo English, a weekly current affairs magazine, hails from Indonesia and has been in journalism and media relations for three decades. She has worked for the Tempo Media Group since 1983, specifically for the Indonesian-language Tempo magazine, until it was banned by the New Order regime in 1994. She rejoined Tempo magazine in 2002 when it started publishing again following the start of Indonesia’s reform era. Her new job was chief editor of Tempo English, a unit of the newly-formed TEMPO Media Group. In May 2015, she became publisher of Tempo English, in charge of its overall management and operations.

Ms Ismartono received her undergraduate studies in political science in New Delhi, India and her graduate studies in journalism at Syracuse, New York, USA. She is a member of AJI (Alliance of Independence Journalists), the Jakarta Editors Club, the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand and the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club.
